Big Ray's Tips

Big Ray’s Top Tips for Summer Set 2017 gives you the info you want to have a fun and successful weekend at the festival. You'll find helpful pointers on driving and parking directions, where to find free water refills, as well as a heads-up on happenings at places like the Pop-Up Stage, plus a list of what you can bring along (and what you should leave at home).

1. Prices Increase Day of Festival

If you haven’t grabbed your tickets in advance, make sure to do so before you arrive on site. Tickets will be available at the gate, however you’ll save money AND time by purchasing in advance!

2. After Parties

The festival ends at midnight on Friday and Saturday, but that doesn’t mean you have to end your night! This year’s official after parties feature an epic two-night lineup starring ILLENIUM on Friday and LOUIS THE CHILD on Saturday. Our 2017 after parties also feature sweet support, with JT&T on Friday and Manic Focus on Saturday. Summer Set's late night after parties are held on-site at the Grove Stage and will begin at midnight and go until 2:30AM. Tickets are on sale here, at the box office all weekend, the Main Stage Info Booth, and at the After Parties themselves!

3. The Official 2016 SSMF iPhone & Android App

Download the official Summer Set app for access to set times, map, custom schedules, location of the Pop-Up Stage, special surprises, & more! We’re going green! In an effort to reduce waste, we’re not printing any fest guide booklets this year. Make sure to download the app before you arrive, as it will be your #1 resource for set times, important news and announcements.

4. Pop-Up Stage

We are excited to have our Pop-Up Stage on Saturday and Sunday, a new addition to the Summer Set experience. Manic Focus and Friends will run things on Saturday, which is an incredible addition to our lineup. You can find out the location of the Pop-Up Stage by downloading our app and allowing notifications. We will send out info the weekend of the festival regarding the location, and the lineup for Sunday’s All Good Records takeover! We know you will enjoy what we have lined up for the All Good Pop-Up Stage!

5. Camping Essentials

At the end of the day, it's better to be over-prepared than to regret not bringing something. Here are some items you might not think to bring with you.

  • Gallons of water and coolers - a good idea to pack a large cooler for drinks and to use as a table and a smaller one for food.
  • Cash – Most transactions will require cash. There will be ATMs, but expect long lines and hefty fees.
  • Spray sunscreen - Spray is quicker than lotion and gives you better coverage.
  • Hand sanitizer - You'll be using Porta-Potties and sweating all day.
  • Toilet Paper - It's not just a festival, it's a camping trip.
  • Portable phone charger - Your phone battery isn't gonna last four days.
  • Lightweight towel - To sit on during down times.
  • Small folding chair - If the towel isn't good enough for you!
  • Hoodie - Because you're camping!
  • Spare shoes / boots - You'll be glad you listened to us if it rains.
  • Bug spray
  • Earplugs
  • Band-Aids
  • Hammock
  • Febreze/ Lysol for the tent
  • Shade Awning-Small shade tents, large umbrellas, and Sunbrellas can be helpful to block out sun and rain during the shows
  • Trash bags. Please help us keep Summer Set clean!

6. Come Prepared for Rain or Shine

We will hope for wonderful August Midwest weather, but one never knows what Mother Nature might bring! If rain is in the forecast AT ALL, bring a poncho at least. Also, trash bags are great for making a dry sitting area after the rain has passed – bring a few extra to make friends for those non-planners. Don’t forget to pack some SPF, wear comfy shoes, and wear a hat for shade. The best way to deal with humidity is to bring a wash cloth/bandana that you can soak with water and hang around your neck to cool off – helps for drying off off after a potential rainstorm too.

7. Getting to SSMF

Wondering how to get to the Summer Set?

I-94/I35 Route: Travel east on I-94 and just after crossing the St. Croix River take exit 1 for Hudson, WI (Hwy 35N). Go through downtown Hudson and continue traveling north on 35/64 until the Somerset exit (VV). Take a left at the top of the ramp & Somerset is 3 miles. The Amphitheater is on the left as you’re approaching town. You can also get on Hwy 36 East and roll over the brand new Stillwater bridge that will whisk you quickly by Stillwater and to Somerset, following the Somerset exit (VV).

I-94/Cty Rd A & I Route: Travel east on I-94 and take exit 4 for US-12 toward Somerset. Turn left at US-12E/Co Rd U. Continue straight onto Co Rd A. Turn left onto Co Rd I and follow into Somerset. Turn left at Spring St. and the Amphitheater will be on your left.

NEW THIS YEAR! All campgrounds will enter off Main St and go through the main toll booths together.

8. Parking Info

Need to stash an additional car at Summer Set for the weekend? No problem! Buy a 3-day overnight parking pass and have convenient access to your car all weekend. NOTE: You may NOT pitch a tent at your parking spot and you may NOT sleep in your car overnight. Single day parking is also available. NOTE: Vehicles with one-day passes left overnight will be towed. Purchase your parking passes here.

9. Pay Attention To Prohibited / Allowed Items

The more you bring, the more we will search and the longer lines will take. We put a lot of thought into the prohibited and allowed items to maximize everyone’s fun and safety, so read them carefully and plan appropriately. See the full list here and feel free to email with any questions.

10. Urban Arts Tent

Summer Set will have an entire tent dedicated to various activities and daily sessions including Yoga, Aerial, Hula Hoop Jam, Pole Dance, Dance Circle, and Fire Performances, plus live painting, body painting, face painting, printing, graffiti, henna tattoos, jewelry making, and more! The Urban Arts Tent is located at the crossroads between the Main Stage and The Grove, right by VIP camping, as well as a performance area in the Main Stage bowl area. Check for fire performances around 7:30pm each night

12. Silent Disco

New this year is our Silent Disco performance area. The Silent Disco will feature two djs performing at the same time, with fans listening on headphones. The headphones allow the listener to flip between the two djs and listen to whichever performer they want. Musically, you can hear styles ranging from hip-hop to hard dance, drum & bass to deep house, trap music to trance, a whole range of music to choose from. This environment is unique, engaging, and fun, and we are excited to have 40+ djs taking part with this stage!
